Care Instructions

Water: Regular and thorough watering is the key to your success. Make sure the water gets to all the plants in the pot, from the edges to the center. Even when we receive rain, please check your containers to see that they received proper hydration.

Rainwater is usually never enough to make a difference. Wind dries out the planters; if it is particularly windy, please water more frequently. Morning water is ideal, but watering in general is key. Plants in the shade do not dry out as quickly and require less watering.

The frequency of watering depends on daily temperatures:

  • 80º and above – water daily
  • 70º – water every other day
  • 60º – water every third day
  • 50º – every week
  • 33º - 40º  – every 10 days
  • 32º or below – no water needed
  • Frost – Be prepared to either bring your insert inside or cover with a breathable fabric. (Please note it is not necessary to cover winter greens.)

Fertilize: We use fertilizer when we plant but also recommend that you use a bloom boosting fertilizer that encourages blooms, starting in mid-June. Simply mix it in a watering can and use it to water your flowers once every 7-14 days.

Trim: Don't be afraid to give your plants a haircut if you have a plant or flower that has gotten a little long or if one plant seems to be taking over the pot. Be careful not to trim off too much at once, however. A good rule of thumb is to trim less than 1/3 of the plant.

Pest control: One good thing about watering daily is that you can notice immediately if a plant starts to fail. If something looks amiss, check for bugs on the underside of the leaves. If you do see bugs, you will want to treat the plant asap with an insecticide called Eight, Neem Oil, or Sevin.

For Winter Inserts: We recommend spritzing the greens with water every week. We applied Wilt Pruf which is an anti-desiccant and helps to keep moisture in the needles in any weather. We recommend reapplying Wilt Pruf (found on Amazon or a local nursery every few weeks.)
